Audio tours and hearing aids: compatibility without universal claims

A visitor arrives with hearing aids fitted by their audiologist. At reception they are handed another earpiece and asked to place it on top. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it is uncomfortable. And sometimes a whistle forces everything to stop in front of the group.
More than 430 million people require rehabilitation for disabling hearing loss, according to the World Health Organization. There is no single hearing aid, phone and tour-system combination that serves all of them.
Why an external earpiece can cause problems
A hearing aid captures sound through microphones, processes it and delivers it to the ear. Bringing another small loudspeaker close can change the acoustic coupling, press on the device or cause feedback: amplified sound re-enters the microphone and creates a whistle.
It is not accurate, however, to say every radioguide makes every hearing aid whistle. Fitting, earmould, position, volume and earpiece type all matter. Some people can use over-ear headphones, a neckloop or temporarily remove a hearing aid; others cannot. Choose the solution with the person, not for them.
Direct audio: compatible does not mean universal
When a phone can send audio directly to a hearing aid or sound processor, there is no second loudspeaker beside it. This may provide a cleaner signal and preserve the person's usual settings. Several technologies exist.
Made for iPhone, or MFi. Apple publishes a list of MFi hearing aids and processors and explains how to pair them in Accessibility settings. The list and system requirements matter: Bluetooth alone does not guarantee direct audio from every iPhone.
ASHA on Android. Android documents ASHA as hearing-aid audio over Bluetooth Low Energy. Both phone and hearing aid need a suitable implementation. Manufacturer and operating-system version can change the outcome.
Bluetooth LE Audio. Some newer equipment uses LE Audio and related profiles, but Bluetooth 5 or a generic logo does not prove streaming compatibility. Check the exact phone, hearing aid or processor model.
Bridge accessories. Some hearing aids receive a signal from an accessory connected to the phone and retransmit it with the manufacturer's technology. This is valid, although it adds another battery and device to prepare.
Telecoils, loops and cochlear implants
A hearing aid in T mode can receive a signal from an installed induction loop or compatible neckloop. In a museum with a good loop, that infrastructure may be the simplest option and should not be discarded merely because an app is available.
Cochlear implant processors also vary. Some stream directly from particular phones; others require an accessory. The processor manual and a trial with its user are the authority, not the assumption that it behaves like a common Bluetooth headset.
When direct streaming is unavailable
There are still options:
- personal headphones, when comfortable for the visitor;
- a neckloop or room loop where compatible;
- a prepared loan device;
- a transcript or equivalent text;
- a position close to the guide for an unamplified explanation.
High volume is not an accessibility solution. It can distort, become uncomfortable and raise risk for other listeners.
A five-step pre-tour test
Complete this check before the group arrives:
- pair the hearing aid or processor using its manufacturer's instructions;
- play ordinary media and confirm the selected output;
- open the tour experience and confirm output again;
- lock the screen, receive a notification and reconnect to see whether routing changes;
- walk a real section, set a comfortable level and confirm the fallback.
Apple warns that a compatibility rating does not guarantee a particular combination works well and recommends using phone and hearing aid together before purchase. That is exactly the right caution for a tour.
How the guide should respond
Ask an open question: “How would you prefer to receive the audio?” Do not request a diagnosis or handle a hearing aid without permission. Offer options and time to test them. Explain how to select the audio output again if a call or notification changes it.
When several people need support, move the check into pre-arrival access rather than solving it after the talk has begun.
What Echoris does and does not do
In the current implementation, Echoris sends live-tour audio to the media output selected by the phone. This must be tested with the exact phone, operating system, hearing aid or processor; it is not certified compatibility.
That does not make Echoris a medical device or guarantee every combination. It also does not currently provide live captions inside the tour. For someone who requires text or sign language, audio alone is not an accessible solution.
The question is not whether Echoris “works with hearing aids”. The useful question is whether this person can receive the audio through their usual setup. If yes, use it. If not, the alternative should be ready before the group arrives.

Frequently asked questions
- Why does my hearing aid whistle when I use a radioguide?
- It may be acoustic feedback: some amplified sound returns to the hearing-aid microphone. It does not happen with every combination; fitting, earmould, position, volume and earpiece type all matter.
- Does a Bluetooth hearing aid connect to Echoris?
- It connects to the phone, not directly to Echoris. If phone and hearing aid are compatible and the output is selected correctly, tour audio can follow that route. Test the exact model.
- What if my hearing aid has no Bluetooth?
- You can listen with your own headphones, at your own volume, from your own phone. It isn't the same as receiving it inside the hearing aid, but it avoids the radioguide's shared earpiece and lets you control the volume.
- Can it be used with a cochlear implant?
- It depends on processor and phone. Some support direct streaming and others need an accessory. Check the manual and run a pre-tour test with the user.
- Does it replace a museum's hearing loop?
- No. A well-installed induction loop may be the simplest option for hearing aids in T mode. A phone-based system can complement other sections but does not make the loop unnecessary.
- Are there live captions?
- No. The live tour is audio only. For someone with no usable residual hearing, this is not an accessible solution.
